Effective light and shadow effects
Located in the immediate vicinity of Potsdamer Platz, the “Dokumentationszentrum Flucht, Vertreibung und Versöhnung“ is designed as a place of learning and remembrance that provides information about the causes, dimensions and consequences of refuge, expulsion and forced migration in the past and present. On 1,700 square metres, the exhibition focuses on the fate of millions of people who had to leave their homes and conveys the fundamental issues of politically, ethnically and religiously motivated forced migration in Europe.

The exhibition is divided into 2 levels. On the first floor, the European history of forced migrations is analyzed. The exhibits here are mainly framed by open frames into which the lighting is integrated. The section of the exhibition on the 2nd floor deals with the refuge and expulsion of Germans as a result of the Second World War started by Germany. Here, the exhibition is characterized by long, themed exhibition furniture in which the exhibits are presented in recessed display cases. The exhibits are mainly illuminated by concealed recessed showcase lighting, equipped with the XOOLUM IP40 luminaire range. Set room cubes emphasize the respective themes with an effective light and shadow effect.

While the artificial lighting on the daylight-bright first floor complements the natural light and discreetly stages the exhibits, the lighting on the first floor is used as a dramaturgical device. Light, shadow and projection are coordinated scenographically, with the shadows used as a sign of absence, as a deliberate stylistic device for the narrative.

The lighting design by Blieske Architects Lighting Designers has been nominated for the German Lighting Design Award 2024 in the museum category.
